Used Car Shopping Tips:

Visually inspect the car for problems before taking it to a mechanic.

Exterior: Be sure the body appears even. Check for rust and for signs of brake fluid leakage on the inside of the tires.
Interior: Check for signs of neglect. Turn on the ignition to check the warning lights, and check the brake pedal for free play.
Engine: Check the dipstick for dark, dirty oil. Check the hoses and belts for cracks and wear. See if the automatic transmission fluid is dark or has a burned odor.
Electrical: Turn on all the electrical accessories at the same time.
Springs & Shocks: Push down on the front and rear corners of the car. If the car bounces several times, the shocks are worn.

Take the "As Is" Sticker Seriously

Most used cars are sold "as is" which means that the car comes with no guarantees or warranties, implied or otherwise. When you buy a used car "as is" you are agreeing to take the car in its present condition, inheriting any problems that it may have. Over half of the used car complaints the BBB receives are unprocessable due to the “as is” sticker. Buying a vehicle is an emotional experience. Make sure you step back and erase any verbal promises the salesperson has made from your mind before signing on the dotted line.
