Protect Your Long Distance Service

Have you been a casualty in the long distance phone wars? An employee of McClatchy Van Lines, a BBB member, filled out a sweepstakes entry blank and listed her work phone number on the card. What she didn’t notice was the fine print authorizing a change in long distance service. She had inadvertently switched long distance carriers for her employer.

Stormy Mills of McClatchy Van Lines said they did not notice the changes until receiving their local phone bill that included long distance charges. He found this unusual since he normally receives a separate long distance phone bill.

The best way to prevent this from happening to your company is to call your local phone company and tell them you want to prohibit any changes in your long distance service without your written authorization.

As an additional precaution, designate one employee to deal with all long distance issues. Make sure every employee knows to refer all calls and correspondence to this person, and you may prevent some very expensive surprises.
