Correcting Credit Card Billing Problems

If you find an error on your credit card bill, do you know what to do? Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have the right to dispute credit card billing errors. Many people immediately pick up the phone to dispute the charges but never write a letter.

To be protected under the law, a letter must be received by the creditor within 60 days after it mailed the first statement with the error. The letter should include your name, account number, a statement explaining that you believe the bill contains an error, and why you believe it is an error. Also include the date and dollar amount involved in the dispute. Send the letter to the address where payments are mailed and keep a copy for your records.

Once the creditor receives your letter, it has 30 days to notify you of the outcome. You do not have to pay the amount in dispute until the matter is settled, however, you must pay all other charges on your bill.
